Microseismic Events Cause Significant pH Drops in Groundwater
نویسندگان
چکیده
Earthquakes cause rock fracturing, opening new flow pathways which can result in the mixing of previously isolated geofluids with differing geochemistries. Here, we present first evidence that seismic events significantly reduce groundwater pH without requirement for fluid mixing, solely through process dynamic fracturing. At Grimsel Test Site, Switzerland, observe repeated, short-lived drops 1–3.5 units, while major and minor ion concentrations remain constant. Acidification coincides reservoir drainage induced microseismic events. In laboratory experiments, demonstrate fresh surfaces made by particle cracking interact situ water molecules, likely creation surface silanols silica radicals, increasing H+ concentration lowering pH. Our findings are significant; exerts a fundamental control on rate outcome most aqueous geochemical reactions commonplace, even seismically inactive regions.

FractVis: Visualizing Microseismic Events
We present our efforts of applying information visualization techniques to the domain of microseismic monitoring. Microseismic monitoring is a crucial process for a number of tasks related to oil and gas reservoir development, e.g., optimizing hydraulic fracturing operations and heavy-oil stimulation. Microseismic data has many challenging features including high dimensionality and uncertainty....

A 2-hydroxyazobenzene platform has been evaluated to photorelease protons in aqueous solutions. Three different systems relying on molecular, supramolecular and polymeric strategies have been investigated in order to tune the water solubility and the thermodynamic and kinetic properties. This paper first reports on the syntheses and the physico chemical analyses for each system. Subsequently, w...
متن کاملVisualizing highly multidimensional time varying Microseismic Events
Making decisions about improving an oil and gas reservoir model based upon microseismic data is a difficult challenge for reservoir engineers and analysts. These difficulties arise because the available data contains inaccuracies, has high-dimensionality and has a high degree of uncertainty. Currently these difficulties are intensified by the lack of computational tools to support interactive v...
متن کاملClustering Revisited: A Spectral Analysis of Microseismic Events
Identifying individual subsurface faults in a larger fault system is important to characterize and understand the relationship between microseismicity and subsurface processes. This information can potentially help drive reservoir management and mitigate the risks of natural or induced seismicity. We have evaluated a method of statistically clustering power spectra from microseismic events asso...
